Waste Management Facilities
Each nuclear power plant (NPP) has its own facility for the conditioning and interim storage of its radioactive waste. In addition, there is a separate interim storage facility (ZWIBEZ) on the Beznau site.
The Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) has facilities for processing radioactive waste from medicine, industry and research from both internal and external sources. The waste is stored at the Federal Storage Facility on the PSI site.
Adjacent to the PSI site is the Central Storage Facility which is owned and operated by the ZWILAG company. It includes storage buildings for spent fuel and various types of radioactive waste, auxiliary facilities for the conditioning of radioactive waste, as well as a plasma furnace for melting and incineration of low level radioactive waste.
