    Fourth Extraordinary Meeting of the Joint Convention decides on improvements to the review process

    The parties to the Joint Convention met under Swiss presidency from 4 to 6 May 2022 for an extraordinary meeting at the IAEA headquarters in Vienna. The purpose of the meeting was to further develop the review processes of the international Convention on the Safety of Spent Fuel Management and on the Safety of Radioactive Waste Management. ENSI represented Switzerland at this meeting.

    EU Peer Review on Ageing Management: Online Platform for National Assessment Reports Opened

    At the end of 2017, all EU countries as well as Switzerland submitted their national assessment reports on the subject of ageing management to the European Nuclear Safety Regulator Group, ENSREG. Until the end of February, ENSREG is giving all interested parties the opportunity to submit questions on the reports.

    Iranian delegation briefed on nuclear regulatory practice in Switzerland

    A delegation from the Iran Nuclear Regulatory Authority (INRA) gained insights into the supervisory activities of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) during a visit from 14 to 18 August 2017. Key issues included the management system, implementation of the backfitting obligation and safety culture.

    Workshop on aspects of biosphere modelling within the context of deep geological repositories

    During a joint project-workshop, members of the international BIOPROTA Forum and members of the IAEA MODARIA II Working Group 6 discussed methods for biosphere modelling within the context of deep geological repositories. The workshop took place from 10 – 12 May 2017 at the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) in Brugg.

    Swiss and Iranian Safety Authorities Exchange Information on Civil Nuclear Safety

    Hans Wanner, Director General of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, ENSI, and Chairman of the Western European Nuclear Regulators’ Association, WENRA, accompanied Swiss President Johann Schneider-Ammann on his trip to Iran over the weekend. As part of the scientific delegation, he met with Naser Rastkah, Head of the Iran Nuclear Regulatory Authority, INRA.

    Switzerland nominated Vice-President of the next CNS Review Meeting

    A large majority of the Contracting Parties to the Convention on Nuclear Safety have elected ENSI Deputy Director Georg Schwarz to be Vice-President of the 7th Review Meeting of the Convention. This will be held in spring 2017 in Vienna.

    At the 59th General Conference of the IAEA the representatives of the member states held discussions about various topics in the field of nuclear energy. The Swiss delegation with its representatives emphasised the international strengthening of nuclear safety.
