WENRA Reference Levels for the Nuclear Safety of Nuclear Power Plants

Globalisation and liberalisation are having a major impact on the nuclear energy sector. Nowadays there are only a few companies left that are actually able to build a nuclear power plant – the concentration of forces in this sector is noticeable. Heavy concentration is also evident in the electricity industry. Some large energy supply companies now operate throughout Europe. National borders have become less important in the nuclear sector. This makes it important for us in Europe to have a shared understanding of safety for nuclear plants at the level of the authorities, so that the requirements in all European countries are comparable. The safety of nuclear plants is no longer merely a country-specific task, but a European and global remit.
