Dr. Georges Piller
Former director, Radiation Protection Division
Georges Piller (1954) studied atomic and nuclear physics at the University of Fribourg obtaining his doctorate there in 1984.
Following a 2-year research assignment on advanced pressurized water reactors working on the Proteus reactor of the Swiss Institute for Reactor Research (now the Paul Scherrer Institute) in Würenlingen, Georges Piller joined the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), initially working on the analysis of measurements from environmental probes and then managing the national radon programme. He was also responsible for the licensing of plants and other sources of radiation, and radioactive waste from medicine, industry and research, as well as for the Radon (and Waste) Section. In addition, he was Deputy Manager of the Radiation Protection Department at FOPH.
In 2006, Georges Piller transferred to HSK, the predecessor of ENSI, and in 2007 was appointed Head of the Division for Radiation Protection, Emergency Preparedness and Organisation, which is now the Department of Radiation Protection. He represents ENSI on the Federal NBCN Crisis Management Board, and Switzerland in HERCA (Heads of European Radiological Protection Competent Authorities), where he’s chairing the Working Group on Emergencies. He was a member of the Swiss Commission for NBC Protection and Swiss delegate on the Radiation Safety Standards Committee of IAEA. Georges Piller has left ENSI in 2016.
