Dr. Rosa Sardella
Director, Radiation Protection Division
Rosa Sardella studied nuclear engineering at the University of Bologna, where she also obtained her doctorate in 1997 in the Department of Mechanical, Nuclear, Aviation and Metallurgical Engineering. During her studies, she was able to combine work on her Masters dissertation with one year’s employment in the French nuclear industry. For the next three years, she participated in various projects at the Joint Research Centre of the European Commission in Ispra.
In 1997, Rosa Sardella joined HSK (as ENSI was then known), where she started out as a member of staff in the Probabilistic Safety Analysis section. In 2000, she transferred to the Radiation Protection department in the Radiation Measurement Technology and Radiological Monitoring of Surrounding Areas section, where she coordinated the operation of ENSI’s measuring network for automatic dose rate monitoring.
She became head of the New Nuclear Power Plants section in 2009. In this function, she coordinated all ENSI’s work in connection with the general licence applications for the three new construction projects at the existing Swiss nuclear power plant sites until the licensing process was suspended in the aftermath of the severe accidents in Fukushima-Daiichi.
From August 2012 until June 2016 she was Deputy Director of the Division for Nuclear Power Plants where her major roles were the coordination of large upgrade projects and the overseeing of the checking and evaluation of incidents at Swiss nuclear power plants. She was also involved in the planning and overall coordination of ENSI activities as part of measures derived from the Fukushima action plans.
Since July 2016, Rosa Sardella has been Director of the Radiation Protection Division, as part of the ENSI Executive Board.
