Georges Piller (1954) studied atomic and nuclear physics at the University of Fribourg obtaining his doctorate there in 1984. Following a 2-year research assignment on advanced pressurized water reactors working on the Proteus reactor of the Swiss Institute for Reactor Research (now the Paul Scherrer Institute) in Würenlingen, Georges Piller joined the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH), initially working on the analysis of measurements from environmental probes and subsequently in charge of the national radon programme. He was also responsible for the licensing of plants and other sources of radiation together with radioactive waste from medicine, industry and research. As well as responsible for the Radon (and Waste) Section, he was also Deputy Manager of the Radiological Protection Department at FOPH. In 2006, Georges Piller joined HSK, the predecessor of ENSI and in 2007 was appointed Head of the Division for Radiation Protection, Emergency Preparedness and Organisation. He represents ENSI on LAR, the national Steering Committee on Radioactivity and is a member of the Swiss Commission for NBC Protection. He is also the Swiss delegate on the “Radiation Safety Standards Committee” of IAEA.
