Director General: Hans Wanner (1955) studied chemistry at ETH Zurich and obtained his PhD in 1984. Following a research assignment at the PSI where he developed models for chemical processes in a deep geological repository, he joined the NEA of the OECD in Paris in 1986. He worked on the development of the international Thermochemical Database.
Deputy Director / Director, NPPs Division: Georg Schwarz (1959) studied geophysics at ETH Zurich and was awarded his doctorate in 1991 by the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. Following assignments at ETH and a period as an independent software specialist, Georg Schwarz joined the former HSK in 1994. Since then, he has performed various roles, initially working as Head of IT Systems.
Director, Waste Disposal Division: Felix Altorfer (born in 1965) studied physics at the ETH Zurich, and obtained his doctorate in 1994 at the Laboratory for Neutron Scattering at the ETH. After working in the US for four years at the NIST Center for Neutron Research, National Institute of Standards and Technology, he returned to Switzerland to undertake research at the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source (SINQ) of the PSI.
Director, Safety Analyses Division: Ralph Schulz (1965) studied mechanical engineering at the RWTH Aachen University specialising in thermodynamics and obtained his doctorate at the end of 1997 from the Laboratory for Energy Systems at ETH Zurich. Following a period of three years with ALSTOM Power working on the development of combined cycle power plants, he joined the former HSK in 2000.
Director, Radiation Protection Division: Rosa Sardella studied nuclear engineering at the University of Bologna, where she also obtained her doctorate in 1997 in the Department of Mechanical, Nuclear, Aviation and Metallurgical Engineering. Since July 2016, Rosa Sardella has been Director of the Radiation Protection Division, as part of the ENSI Board.
Chief of Staff: After his apprenticeship and employment as a laboratory assistant at Ciba-Geigy AG, Andreas Schefer (born in 1969) studied law at the University of Basel. He received his degree in 2001. He was then employed at the University of Basel, in the Department of Justice of Basel-City and in the Department of Health and Social Affairs of the Canton of Aargau.
