The ENSI Board is the strategic and internal supervisory body of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate. Its members are elected by the Federal Council for a term of office of four years on each occasion and, in particular, they have a specialist knowledge of nuclear safety as well as management experience. They are not permitted to engage in any commercial activities, nor may they hold any office at Federal or cantonal level which could detract from their independence.
The ENSI Board endeavours to continue strengthening ENSI as a supervisory authority, and is committed to the ongoing improvement of safety. For these purposes, it strives to be open and transparent, and to maintain constant dialogue with all stakeholders as well as the general public.
Against the background of the lessons learnt from the major nuclear accident in Fukushima, the ENSI Board will continue to carry out its duties both vigilantly and independently, while ensuring the clear separation of ENSI’s regulatory safety function on the one hand from economic and political interests on the other.
The ENSI Board mourns Karine Rausis. She passed away at the beginning of January 2016. Karine Rausis had been a member of the independent supervisory body of the nuclear supervisory authority ENSI since the beginning of 2014.
Rosa Sardella is to be the new Director of the Division for Radiation Protection at ENSI. The ENSI Board has appointed the 47 year old, who holds a doctorate in nuclear engineering, as the successor to retiring Division Director Georges Piller, effective July 1st, 2016.
The Swiss Federal Council will select a new member of the ENSI Board by the end of this year for the next term of office. Following his two terms in office, Hans-Jürgen Pfeiffer will no longer be serving on the Board. For reasons of age he is ending his work in the strategic and internal supervisory body of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI.
The regulatory framework of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) is harmonised with the relevant international requirements. ENSI only issues its own guidelines when it is necessary to do so, and it involves all the stakeholders when it drafts them. These principles are stated in a new strategy for the regulatory framework which the ENSI Board has approved.
Pierre Steiner will step down from the ENSI Board at the end of 2012 after five years of service. Mr Steiner, who is 69, cites his age as the main reason for his decision. The ENSI Board regrets his departure and wishes to thank Pierre Steiner for his work and his great dedication.
