In Switzerland, on-going activities regarding safety assessment of the different stages in the lifetime of nuclear installations consist of periodic assessments and assessments of long-term operation for existing Swiss NPPs.

When it comes to international affairs, Switzerland has signed the Convention on Nuclear Safety (CNS) on 31 October 1995. In November 2011, an IRRS Mission was conducted in Switzerland. The results of the mission are currently being implemented, and it is planned to have an IRRS Follow-Up Mission in 2015. In October 2012, an OSART Mission to the Mühleberg NPP was completed. Switzerland participated in the European Stress Test and its Follow-Up activities.

Switzerland renews bilateral agreement for nuclear safety with the USA

Switzerland extended its agreement with the United States with regard to the exchange of technical information and collaboration on issues of nuclear safety. The renewal between the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI and the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission US NRC took place at the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency IAEA in Vienna.

A delegation from the Iran Nuclear Regulatory Authority (INRA) gained insights into the supervisory activities of the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) during a visit from 14 to 18 August 2017. Key issues included the management system, implementation of the backfitting obligation and safety culture.

Switzerland wants to strengthen its nuclear security regime with an IPPAS mission

Switzerland has submitted an application for an IPPAS mission to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This should take place in the middle of 2018 and aims at strengthening Switzerland’s nuclear security.

Workshop on aspects of biosphere modelling within the context of deep geological repositories

During a joint project-workshop, members of the international BIOPROTA Forum and members of the IAEA MODARIA II Working Group 6 discussed methods for biosphere modelling within the context of deep geological repositories. The workshop took place from 10 – 12 May 2017 at the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate (ENSI) in Brugg.

ENSI decides that Swiss nuclear plants should participate in Europe-wide peer review on ageing management

Nuclear power plants in Switzerland are to take part in a Europe-wide peer review on ageing management this year. ENSI, the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate, has decided that Swiss plants should participate in the EU Topical Peer Review.
