Jacques Giovanola (born in 1950) graduated in mechanical engineering from the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) in 1976, and obtained his doctorate from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1980.

Between 1980 and 1996, he held various positions at SRI International, and was latterly its Program Manager. At SRI International, his tasks included work on problems of fracture dynamics in connection with contracts from Oak Ridge National Laboratory/NRC, the US Navy and the Electric Power Research Institute.

Since 1996, Jacques Giovanola has been Professor of Mechanical Design at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) and Director of the Mechanical Systems Design Laboratory, LCSM. He has also been Dean of the EPFL’s Postgraduate School since 2006.

Jacques Giovanola is the author of numerous specialist publications and has written a book. He sits on various national and international committees and is a member of the group of experts of the Swiss Federal Commission for Technology and Innovation (CTI).

He has been a member of the ENSI Board since 2012.
